May 9, 1860 Kirrimyur - June 19, 1937 London - Scottish actor, playwright and novelist.

Was the ninth of 10 children in the family of a weaver and a housewife.

Studied at Dumfries Academy, then at the University of Edinburgh. After graduating from university, he worked in the editorial office of the Nottingham Journal newspaper.

He began his literary career in 1885. In 1889, the writer published a series of stories from village life "Idyll Old Lichta" and a novel from the life of journalists "When a man is alone." Then Barry wrote the unsuccessful melodrama Better Dead (1888), the love-psychological novels The Little Minister (1891), Sentimental Tommy (1896) and its sequel, Tommy and Grisel (Tommy and Grizel, 1900), a book about the mother, Margaret Ogilvy (1896).

Since 1897, Barry has turned to drama (stage adaptation of The Little Minister). Fame brings him "Quality Street" (Quality Street, 1901), a comedy depicting England in the early 19th century. Barry's plays ("Mary Rose", "Wonderful Crichton", "Quality Street", "What Every Woman Knows") introduced him to the circle of prominent playwrights of the time.

In 1904, the play Peter Pan was staged.

Barry received many honors: in 1913 he was promoted to baronet, in 1922 he was awarded the Order of Merit; in 1919-1922 he became the rector of St. Andrews University, in 1930-1937 - the chancellor of the University of Edinburgh; from 1928 he was president of the "Society of Writers".

In 2004, Mark Forster directed the James Barry biopic, Fairyland. Johnny Depp played the role of Barry.

All over the world Barry is known as the author of the fairy tale about Peter Pan. The Davis Boys served as prototypes for Peter Pan and other children in the Neverland stories.
