Robert Adolph Wilton Morley, an English actor who usually appeared in the form of a pompous English gentleman representing the establishment, often in supporting roles.
Morley was born in Semley, Wiltshire, England, the son of Gertrude Emily (nee Fass) and Robert Wilton Morley. His mother came from a German family who emigrated to South Africa. Morley graduated from Wellington College, Berkshire, which he hated, and then RADA.
Robert Morley married Joan Bookmaster (1910-2005), daughter of Dame Gladys Cooper. Their eldest son, Sheridan Morley, became a writer and critic. They also had a daughter, Annabelle, and another son, Wilton.
Morley was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1957 and was also offered knighthood in 1975, but turned it down.
