Richard Prince is one of the most famous American artists of his generation. He became famous in the 1980s for his famous series Cowboys, Jokes and Hoods, in which Prince used images from magazines, popular culture and pulp fiction to create photographs, sculptures and paintings that appeal to ideas of American identity and the consumer world.
The Prince's work is among the most innovative art created in the United States over the past 30 years. His deceptively simple act in 1977 to re-photograph advertising images and present the result as his own work, heralded a completely new, critical approach to the creation of works of art, which raises the question of the concepts of originality and the privileged status of a unique aesthetic object.
Richard Prince has chosen themes that are close to the American way of life, such as the Marlboro cowboys, biker gangs or celebrities. Since the 1970s, he has reproduced and reinterpreted these motifs in photography and painting, with particular emphasis on the dark side of society. The prince partnered with Marc Jacobs in 2008 to create a spring collection for Louis Vuitton, After Dark. The artist monogrammed bags or wrote jokes about his favorite themes of gender, race or poverty.
