British (Welsh) rock band, founded in 1986 under the name Betty Blue in the small mining town of Blackwood in the south of Wales. The Manic Street Preachers started out as a punk band, but later moved closer to the mainstream rock. The band has always been distinguished by the politicization of the lyrics and statements of the musicians.
