British rock band, formed in 1993 in Cardiff, Wales, and combining elements of numerous genres within the melodic Brit-pop: pop punk, power pop, psychedelia, techno, art rock. The Super Furry Animals, the leaders of the "Welsh movement" that emerged in the British rock scene in the mid-1990s, performed much of their early repertoire in their native language. The group declared leftist views, actively participated in politics and wrote satirical texts, which was radically different from other Welsh groups of its time (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, 60 Ft. Dolls, Catatonia).
