Born on January 15, 1905 in Ekaterinoslavl (now - Dnepropetrovsk).
In 1923 he graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory, piano.
Since 1922 he has been performing concerts.
In 1929-1927. worked as head of the musical department of the Theater. V. Meyerhold. He is the author of musical design for a number of performances by the Sovremennik Theater and Gosnardom in Leningrad.
In 1929-1942. worked as a sound engineer, director at the Lenfilm film studio.
Since 1945 - director of the Mosfilm film studio. Supervised the 2nd TO of the "Mosfilm" movie theater.
Since 1923, he has been engaged in literary activity.
Husband of movie actress Galina Vodyanitskaya.
He passed away on December 26, 1979 in Moscow.
