Born December 31, 1905 in Yekaterinoslavl (now - Dnepropetrovsk) .
In 1922-1924. studied at the metallurgical faculty of the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute.
In 1927 he graduated from the directing department of the State Customs Committee (now - VGIK; workshop of Vs. Pudovkin) .
He worked at the Mezhrabpomfilm film studio.
Since 1929 - director of "Belgoskino"
in 1940-1956 - director of the film studio "Lenfilm",
since 1956 - the Mosfilm film studio .
Honored Artist of the Byelorussian SSR (1934).
Honored Artist of the Lithuanian SSR (1954) .
Passed away on March 21, 1982. He was buried at the 13th site of the Vvedensky cemetery in Moscow.
