Paul Butkevich was born on August 8, 1940 in Riga. Even before the start of the terrible Great Patriotic War, the Paula family had a dacha, a large plot of land, a sewing workshop and a factory. At the end of the hostilities, all this property was nationalized. A large, by the standards of that time, Butkevichs' apartment was converted into a communal one, but despite all this, Paul did not consider himself a nationalist. After completing his studies at school, Butkevich entered a vocational school, and then went to work at the VEF plant. In parallel with this, he often attended theater classes in a studio attached to the Rainis Art Theater. Later, the actor admitted that he went to work at VEF only to earn money to support his family. Gradually at the plant he was promoted from an ordinary traffic controller to a foreman. Combining everything at once, Paul managed to take part in the filming of cinematic films, where he got small roles. But soon the talented actor was noticed and they began to invite him for larger projects in which he played leading roles. So life went on, he worked at a factory and spent time on the set. The actor gained popularity after a movie with Paul Butkevich appeared on the screens called The Hippocratic Oath. The actor can be confidently called multifaceted, he took an active part in almost all film industries both in the USSR and abroad. During this time, films appeared with the participation of Paul Butkevich with the titles Tony Wendis's Error, The Long Road in the Dunes, Waterloo, The Case at the Airport, The Strong in Spirit and many others. The actor is much better known in Russia than in his homeland, because of the large number of films, only the largest part was filmed by Latvian cinema.
