Yuri wrote his first story about a kitten living in their communal apartment in the fourth grade.
After graduating from school, Sotnik traveled a lot across Russia, was a photographic assistant, worked as a raftsman on the Lena River, and fished. From what he saw, he began to write stories.
In 1938 he joined the literary association at the publishing house Soviet Writer.
The first published story "Archimedes" Vovka Grushin "Sotnik released in 1939. In this story, the Centurion described how he wanted to build a submarine as a child. In the post-war years, he released many stories about the life of adolescents, which fell into different stories. Many of his heroes were pioneers. According to the plot, some of his characters had to get into different adventures, even sit in an ambush.
A series of stories from the 1950s – 1960s forms a cycle about the officer's son, schoolboy Lesha Tuchkov and his neighbors in the courtyard, marked by a combination of adventurous intrigue, lyricism and humor typical for Sotnik.
