As a teenager and young man tried many professions - loader, courier, worker of railway workshops in Odessa. In the Red Army, where he was drafted in 1927, he served as a librarian in an auto battalion located in Kharkov. In the same place, in 1929, his literary activity began. After demobilization in 1931, S. Nagorny worked as a special correspondent and essayist for the newspapers Gudok, Krasnaya Zvezda, Izvestia.
The biography of the polar explorer and hydrograph G. Ya. Sedov (1877-1914) brought wide fame as the writer S. Nagorny. The book, written in 1938, was based on materials from the archive of the Academy of Sciences and Sedov's personal diary and is dedicated to the expedition to the North Pole at ship "Saint Foka" in 1912. Released in the series "Life of Remarkable People" in 1939. In addition to stories, essays and critical articles published in the press, he tries his hand as a screenwriter. According to the script, written by Nagorny together with G. Maryamov, the short story "Mother" was shot.
As part of a fighter battalion of the people's militia, he took part in the defense of Moscow in the fall of 1941. He went through the war as a war correspondent for the newspapers Stalinsky Sokol and Alarm. He was seriously wounded at Stalingrad. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and medals.
In the post-war forties and in the early fifties S. Nagorny wrote scripts, based on which biographical documentaries about Belinsky, Pushkin, Mayakovsky were shot. Since the mid-1950s, in creative collaboration with the Latvian writer J. P. Vanags, scripts for feature films "Spring Frosts", "Behind a Swan Flock of Clouds", "The Tale of the Latvian Arrow" have been created. In the sixties and seventies, he created scripts for films that were included in the golden fund of Soviet cinema - the film story "At Your Threshold", "The City of First Love", "Quiet", "Rafferty" and others.
