Born on January 17, 1890 in St. Petersburg.
Graduated from the Petersburg Commercial School.
He served in the Kiev office of the State Bank, at the same time played on stage in the troupe of P.P. Struisky.
On the professional stage since 1920. He worked in theaters in Kiev, Stary Oskol, Kremenchug.
In 1925-1930 he played at the Leningrad Theater "Comedy", then at the Yaroslavl Theater.
In 1932 he was an actor of the Far Eastern Theater.
In 1934-1945 - actor and director of the Odessa Russian Drama Theater, from 1946 - Maly Theater (Moscow) .
People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1946);
Laureate of the USSR State Prizes (1951, 1952) .
Passed away - September 30, 1957. He was buried at the Vvedenskoye cemetery in Moscow.
