Graduated from the directing department of VGIK (1951, workshop of Igor Savchenko) .
In 1941-1945 - a participant in the Great Patriotic War, was a pilot. He was shot down over Odessa. For a long time, a woman hid Henry in the besieged city. He survived, but lost an eye, and spent his whole life with a black eye patch.
Since 1951 - director of the Kiev, then Odessa film studios. Since 1962 - director of the Mosfilm film studio.
Author of a number of stories for the film magazine "Fit" .
After the film "Lebedev vs. Lebedev," Genrikh Gabay was completely out of work and in the early 70s he emigrated to Israel, and then to America. After that, the name Gabay disappeared from the Soviet cinema completely.
Emigration did not bring him either prosperity or success. He died forgotten by all in 2003.
