Soviet film director, screenwriter.
Born on October 27, 1927 in the city of Ramon, Voronezh Region.
In 1944-1947 he studied at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute,
in 1951 he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute.
He worked in the MAI laboratory, as a senior engineer at the Moscow radio center.
In 1958 he graduated from the Higher Directing Courses at the Mosfilm film studio, where he studied with Georgy Danelia. In the same year, he was convicted of a fight in a restaurant. After returning, he tried to return to directing. But a man with a tarnished reputation was only trusted to be a co-director. Thanks to the support and perseverance of Danelia, a few years later it was possible to obtain permission for an independent production of "Gentlemen of Fortune". In co-authorship with the writer Victoria Tokareva and Georgy Danelia, he edited the script by Valentin Yezhov (known for the script “White Sun of the Desert”) for the film “Gentlemen of Fortune”. The famous slang phrases were added to the film by Alexander Sery himself - the prison experience came in handy. Unfortunately, Gray began filming such a long-awaited picture in deep depression - the doctors diagnosed him with blood leukemia.
The success of the picture was deafening, two copies were able to fulfill the annual plan.
In subsequent years, the director will stage two more comedies - "You - to me, I - to you" (1976) and "Take care of men" (1982).
