In 1955 he graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute, in 1954-1955 he worked as an architect at the Institute of Urban Design. Danelia was interested in cinema, acted as extras and in 1956 entered the newly opened Higher Directing Courses (workshop of Mikhail Kalatozov), which he graduated in 1959.
Since 1959 - production director of Mosfilm. In 1965-1969 he was the artistic director of the Experimental Creative Association at Mosfilm, in 1975-1987 he was the artistic director of the Experimental Association of Comedy and Musical Films. Since 1987 - President and Artistic Director of the Ritm Film Studio of the Mosfilm Film Concern.
The very first film "Seryozha" (together with IV Talankin) attracted the attention of critics and viewers. His programmatic work was the film "I Walk Through Moscow" (1964), which became a cultural event in the Khrushchev thaw.
Starting with the film "Thirty-three" (1965), the director turns to the genre of satire and becomes a recognized master of comedy. Creativity is distinguished by truly deep satire, thoughtful grotesque, subtle lyricism and the disclosure of the psychological image of the heroes. The ability to create a well-coordinated ensemble of actors from different schools is a special gift of the master as a director.
In 1967-1970 he created several miniatures for the satirical magazine "Fitil". The most famous story - "On the benefits of alcohol" (1974) with the participation of the actor E. Leonov.
Such films as "Mimino", "Autumn Marathon", "Kin-Dza-Dza!" have brought great popularity to the director.
Starred in episodes of his films. Author or co-author of scripts for most of his films, as well as co-author of scripts for films shot by other directors.
In the 1987/1988 season, he was invited to the jury of the Higher League of KVN.
Georgy Danelia is a member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR, an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts, an academician of the National Academy of Cinematic Arts and Sciences of Russia, an academician of the Russian Academy of Cinematic Arts "Nika".
Since 2003 - President of the George Danelia Foundation for the Preservation of Traditions and Development of New Cinema.
