Born, according to various sources, in Waco (Texas) or in Ottawa (Illinois). His father held a senior position at the oil company Phillips Petroleum. Malik graduated from high school in Austin and received his philosophy education at Harvard University. Thanks to his scientific advisor Stanley Kavell, Malik became interested in Heidegger's philosophy. According to several sources, he has worked as a journalist for Life, Newsweek and The New Yorker, but the specific articles he wrote are unknown. In 1969, while teaching philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Malik entered the American Film Institute. While studying there, Malik directed the short film Lanton Mills, starring Harry Dean Stanton and Warren Oates. At the same time, Malik wrote the screenplay for the Deadhead Miles road movie and presumably worked on the scripts for Jack Nicholson's directorial debut He Said Let's Go! and Don Siegel's western "Dirty Harry" (both times Malik was not credited). In 1972, Stuart Rosenberg's film Pocket Money was released, based on a script by Malik, who this time was directed by the screenwriter. The film, which continued the fashionable cowboy theme of Rosenberg's previous work, Cold-Blooded Luke, received generally negative reviews, including a "deu" from Roger Ebert.
Malik made his directorial debut in Wasteland, starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. Based on the story of the killers Charles Starkweather and Caryl Fugate, named Keith and Holly in the film, the film fits into a series of classic road movies about a pair of killer lovers opposing society like Bonnie and Clyde. However, the peculiarity of Malik's film is that the director does not consider his characters as romantic heroes, but deliberately parodies the conventions of the genre: Keith and Holly are trying to behave as, in their opinion, real heroes should behave. With this move Malik reveals their inner squalor and meaninglessness of existence. Three years later, the second film, Days of Harvest, was released. The drama, which took place on a World War I farmer's estate, was well received by critics. The work of cameraman Nestor Almendros was awarded an Oscar, and Malik received a prize for directing at the Cannes Film Festival. While working on the film, Malik clashed with the leading actor Richard Gere, and after filming ended, he spent two years editing. After that, the head of Gulf & Western (the company that owned Paramount Pictures) Charles Blodhorn offered Malik a million dollars in order to shoot the next film on Paramount. Malik has planned a large-scale production of military action in the Middle East during the First World War. Gradually, the script changed: first, it included a prologue telling about the origin of life on Earth, then it became the main storyline. In the end, without starting work on the film (only landscape shots were made from different parts of the Earth), Malik left for Paris to his friend and for the next years led the life of a recluse, did not make films and did not communicate with journalists, gaining the reputation of "Salinger from the cinema ".
In 1988, producers Bobby Geisler and Joe Roberdo met with Malik. They offered Malik to film the novel by D. M. Thomas "The White Hotel". Malik replied that he would like to shoot Tartuffe after Moliere or the war drama The Thin Red Line based on the novel by J. Jones. The producers agreed to the second option. In May 1989, Malik completed a draft of the script. In the future, Malik turned to other projects and cast Thin Red Line for a long time. Finally, in 1995, negotiations began with the actors, and in 1997, filming. In the film, an acting ensemble was assembled from future and already established stars of the first magnitude, such as James Caviezel, Adrienne Brody, George Clooney, Woody Harrelson, John Cusack, Sean Penn. The Thin Red Line came out at the end of 1998, In 2005, the film "New World" was released, dedicated to the story of John Smith and Pocahontas. The film generated very different reviews, it was called protracted and meaningless, but at the end of the decade, it entered many lists of the best films. The director's last work, The Tree of Life, was released in 2011. It was planned that the film will enter the competition program of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, but Malik did not have time to finish it on time, and the film was presented to the public on May 16, 2011 at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, causing a sold-out. The film received the main award and was included in the 10 best films of 2011 according to the American Film Institute. The main roles in the film were played by Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn.
