Born January 12, 1993, Bradford, UK, better known as Zayn (sometimes written in capital letters) is a British actor, director, singer, model and composer.
Attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School. Malik said that he was not accepted in the first two schools because of his origin, but after moving to another school, the situation improved. As a teenager, he was fond of writing rap and once sang on the same stage with Jay Sean when he came to his school. From 15 to 17 he also went in for boxing.
In 2010, 17-year-old Malik arrived in Manchester to audition for the seventh season of the hit show The X Factor. He sang the song "Let Me Love You" by American singer Mario and was admitted to the next round. After listening, he said he was "gaining experience." He was eliminated before the final, but judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell asked him to form a group later known as One Direction with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson. In Britain they signed to Syco Music and in America with Columbia Records.
The first album, Up All Night, was released in November 2011 and topped the charts in 16 countries. The second album, Take Me Home, was released a year later, in November 2012. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with sales of 540,000 copies in its first week and reached number one in 35 countries around the world. The third album, Midnight Memories, also debuted at the top of the US main charts, and the group became the first in history to debut three albums with this indicator. As of March 2015, 6,490,000 albums and 23,700,000 singles have been sold. Over 50 million copies have been sold worldwide. The fourth album, Four, was released on November 17, 2014 and also debuted at # 1 on the Billboard 200.
In March 2015, Zane made the decision to leave the group. The last performance with the group took place on March 18, 2015 in Hong Kong as part of the On The Road Again Tour.
On July 29, 2015, Zane signed a contract with RCA Records. Lead single "Pillowtalk" from Zane's debut album Mind of Mine was released on January 29, 2016 along with a music video and received positive reviews from music critics. The second single, "Like I Would", was released on March 10, 2016. In support of the album, two promo-singles were released - "iT's YoU" (including the video) and "Befour". The album premiered around the world on March 25.
On September 7, 2017, Malik released the first single from the upcoming second studio album "Dusk Till Dawn", recorded in collaboration with singer Sia. The song entered the top 5 iTunes charts for US sales.
