Klu's grandfather was the Danish artist Christian Gulager, who once painted a portrait of George Washington. He later left his family, moved to the South of the United States and began living with an Indian woman of the Charoki tribe. Clu's father was a Broadway actor and later became a judge.
The actor was married once, from 1952 to 2003 until the death of his wife. He has two children.
Clu served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948.
The US Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films nominated Gulager for its Saturn Prize for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Hunter's Blood (1987).
A Day with the Boys short film (1969) was nominated for the Grand Prix at the Cannes International Film Festival.
