Soviet ballet star Maris Liepa was born in Latvia in 1936. The views of his parents on the future fate of the boy were different: his father saw him on the stage, his mother wanted her son to grow up as a doctor. The father won in this dispute, and the boy was sent to a ballet studio.
Valentin Blinov pays attention to him at school. Little Maris has already shown himself as a characteristic dancer. At the age of 13, Maris dances not only in children's ballet, but also plays roles in adult productions.
In 1953, the most promising students of the Riga school were transferred to Moscow, to a choreographic school. The theater does not give the young man a scholarship, and the parents were forced to sell the dacha so that their son could continue to study ballet.
In 1955, he graduated from college with honors, but he was not hired at the Bolshoi Theater, since the Republic of Latvia demanded that its graduate return home. Unexpectedly, he received an invitation from Maya Plisetskaya to go on tour to Hungary as part of the USSR Culture Days program.

He plays leading roles in ballets: Don Quixote, Spartacus. Since 1970, the relationship between Maris and the management of the theater has deteriorated, they stop giving him roles, and Maris tries himself in the cinema.
The first film with Maris Liepa was released in 1969. He played the main role in the ballet film - Hamlet. This was followed by the films: The Tomb of the Lion, the Fourth, Icarus for three minutes, Your Name.
Since the Bolshoi Theater remains unclaimed, it begins to cooperate with the troupe of Boris Eifman. Only in 1982 he returned to the stage of his native theater in order to dance his last dance there. After that, the actor is retired.
Since 1983 he has been staging two ballets at the Sofia People's Opera. In 1989, a decision was made to create a theater in Moscow. Maris Liepa, where he will be the artistic director. However, shortly before the opening of the theater, the famous artist dies of a heart attack. On March 26, 1989, the famous dancer passed away.
