Arana was born in Auburn, California. He grew up in San Francisco and studied classical theater at the American Conservatory of Theater and San Francisco City College. He subsequently moved to New York and performed in off-Broadway productions. He then hitchhiked all over Europe and ended up living in Naples, Italy, where he worked at the famous Lucio Amelio Gallery. There he worked with such artists as Warhol, Boyes, Rauschenberg, Richter, Clemente, etc. Andy Warhol painted his portrait, which is now part of Aran's extensive art collection. He lives between Italy and Hollywood and has three sons.
Arana has played leading and supporting roles in more than 30 European productions, including films from directors Lina Wertmuller, Liliana Cavani, Carlo Verdoni, Michelle Soavi and one of Japan's most successful directors, Koreyoshi Kurahara in I See You. He appeared as Quint in Ridley Scott's epic Gladiator, and also starred in the second film in the Jason Bourne series, The Bourne Supremacy. Arana was a producer and lead actor for the world renowned theater company Falso Movimento, based in Naples, Italy. Under the direction of Arana and artistic director Mario Martoni (now Italian filmmaker), Falso Movimento has won numerous awards, including the Best Play of the Year award and the Mondello Prize.
Arana also played GRU agent Loginov in the 1990 film version of Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October, the future assassin in 1992's The Bodyguard starring superstars such as Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, the leader of the Belarusian resistance in the 2008 film Challenge by Edward Zwick and the Man in the Brown Coat in 2011 in Fields of Darkness opposite Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. He appeared in the third installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy "The Dark Knight Rises" as attorney Bruce Wayne.
Starred in small roles in the series: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Miami (Season 1, Episode 16) the role of the owner of the intimate institution where the murder took place.
