Born August 14, 1928, Rome, Lazio, Italy, real name - Arcangela Felice Assunta Wertmuller von Elgg Espanyol von Braueich is an Italian screenwriter, director, actress and producer.

In 1951, she graduated from the Roman Theater Academy under the direction of Pietro Sharov, worked as an assistant director in musical and drama theaters. After meeting Federico Fellini became assistant director in the films La Dolce Vita and Eight and a Half. In 1963 she shot her first full-length film "Basilisks". During this period, she met the actor Giancarlo Giannini, who later played in her best films. Then Werthmuller shot three more films - "This Time Let's Talk About Men" (1965), the comedy "Rita the Boredom" (1966) and the television show "The Bell Starr Story" (1967) under the pseudonym George Brown. After that, Werthmuller returned to the theater. She married Enrico Job, who became a decorator for her films.

In 1972, her comedy "Insulted by the Honor of Mimi the Metallurgist" received a nomination for the Cannes Film Festival. In this and her subsequent films, Giancarlo Giannini played, who gained international fame. In the 1970s, comedies with socio-political overtones "A film about love and anarchy" (1973), "Everything is in place and everything is in disarray" (1974), "Pasqualino" Seven beauties "(1975), became the first woman. - nominee for the Oscar for Best Director.

In 1978, Werthmuller made a movie in Hollywood, End of the World in Our Married Bed One Rainy Night, which proved to be a commercial failure. Subsequent films with erotic stories did not repeat the success of Werthmuller's early works.

Lina Wertmuller acts as a theatrical playwright and co-writer of films for other directors, and has directed Carmen at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
