March 8, 1926, Aguilas - August 29, 2001, Bordeaux - Spanish actor.
In 1936, with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the Rabal family moved to Madrid. Francisco worked in a chocolate factory and as a street vendor. At the age of 13, he was forced to leave school to work as an electrician at a film studio. After taking part in the crowd several times, he was advised to try his luck at the theater. In subsequent years, Rabal played several roles in various theater companies. In one of the troupes, he met the actress Asuncion Balaguer; they got married and stayed together for the rest of Rabal's life. Their daughter Teresa is an actress and performer of popular songs in the genre of mini-disco, Benito's son is a filmmaker.
In 1947, Rabal got a permanent job at the theater. He performed under his full name, although close people always called him Paco (short for Francisco), and "Paco Rabal" became his unofficial stage name.
In the 1940s, he began acting in extras, and played his first serious roles in the 1950s. He worked in Spain, Italy, Mexico and France with such directors as Pedro Almodovar, Carlos Saura, Michelangelo Antonioni, Lina Wertmuller, Valerio Zurlini, Alberto Lattoada, Arturo Ripstein, Leopoldo Torre Nilsson, Jacques Rivette, Fran Claude Balsco Chabroli. He is best known for his roles in Luis Bunuel's films "Nazarene" and "Viridiana" .
William Friedkin wanted to invite Rabal to the role of Alain Charnier in the film "The French Messenger", but could not remember the name of "that Spanish actor". His assistant mistakenly invited another Spanish actor, Fernando Rey, with whom Rabal had starred several times. Friedkin, having learned that Rabal did not speak English or French, approved for the role of Ray. Subsequently, Rabal starred with Friedkin in the much less successful but now cult "Sorcerer", a remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot's masterpiece "The Payment for Fear" .
It is believed that Rabal played his best roles after the death of Francisco Franco (1975): Innocent Saints (1984, Best Actor Award at the Cannes IFF), Who Will Senor Cayo Vote (1988) (both films based on novels Miguel Delibes), TV series "The Reed". For the role of Francisco Goya in Saura's film Goya in Bordeaux, Rabal won the Goya Award for Best Actor.
Rabal is the only Spanish actor to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Murcia. Died on a plane from compensatory emphysema while returning to Bordeaux from the Montreal Film Festival, where he received the award. It is surprising that Francisco Goya also died in Bordeaux. One of the last films with his participation, "Dagon", has a dedication before the opening credits: "The film is dedicated to Francisco Rabal, a wonderful actor and an even better person." Gruvemuvestart Buried in his hometown of Aguilas.
