Stephen McHatty was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He has appeared in numerous films and TV series, including Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Star Trek: Enterprise, Highlander and Life Underwater (1989). His roles include 300, Violence Justified, The Fountain, The Secretary, Shoot Them, Beverly Hills Cop 3.
In Canada, he appeared in Canada: A History of the People as Canadian hero Major General Isaac Brock and in Rocket as legendary trainer Dick Irwin.
In 1976, McHatty played James Dean in the television movie James Dean: A Portrait of a Friend, a television adaptation of a biography written by Dean's friend, writer Bill Bast.
McHatty appeared in several episodes of Seinfeld (starting with the episode "Step"), where he played Dr. Reston, a manipulative psychiatrist / boyfriend Elaine Benis. He also appeared in two episodes of The X-Files. 1998 to 2000 McHatty had a supporting role in the Canadian television series Emily of New Moon, based on the 1923 novel by writer Lucy Maud Montgomery. Since 2005, he has appeared as Captain / Commander Healy in all eight films of the Jesse James series, which are based on the novels by Robert B. Parker. In 2014. starred as Wang in the television series The Strain.
He voiced the villain Shadow in the Justice League animated series and played Hollis Mason, the first Night Owl in the Watchmen adaptation.
McHatty is married to actress Lisa Hole, with whom they have three children. Prior to that, he was married to actress Meg Foster.
