Was born in Los Angeles, California, USA. The son of stuntman Chris Howell, S. Thomas first wanted to become a rodeo member. He was named the best cowboy in the California Youth Rodeo Association from 1978 to 1980, and already then did stunts for young actors.
That all changed when he debuted (as Tom) as one of the Neighborhood Guys who helped an alien (ET) in 1982. Successfully played the role of Pony Boy in "Outcasts" (1983) by Francis Ford Coppola. Larger roles followed in the fantasy of the Russian invasion of the United States in Red Dawn (1984), followed by a role that made him a teen idol in Secret Admirer (1985). "The Hitcher" and "Soul Man", both in 1986, in which he played a white student posing as color for a scholarship. Then his roles were limited to such modest films as "The Legend of the Tiger" (Tiger's Tale), 1987, Zeffirelli's failed project "Young Toscanini), 1987, in which he starred opposite Elizabeth Taylor," Return of the Musketeers " and many B films. He is married to actress Ray Dawn Chong, with whom he starred in the movie Far Out Man.
