In his youth, he was professionally engaged in swimming. At the age of 19 he made an attempt to leave the country. From 1987 he worked at the Schiller Theater (Berlin). In 1991 Thomas moves to Vienna. In the same year he won the Best Young Actor category at the Max Ophuls Festival for his role in the television series Der Mitwisser. The actor is famous for the role of Captain Wilm Hosenfeld in the film "The Pianist" (2002). In 2006 he won the Best Actor award at the Rothenburg Festival (Catalonia International Film Festival). Kretchman is the face of the new fragrance from Hugo Boss. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
