March 16, 1889 - February 26, 1956 - American singer, actress, and screenwriter.
At the age of eleven, she already began to play regularly in vaudeville, and as an adult she took the pseudonym Elsie Janice. In 1906 she made her acting debut on Broadway, where she soon achieved notable success by participating in revues and musicals. In addition to the New York scene, Janice also played in London, where she earned praise from local critics. In 1915, Janice started her career in Hollywood, where she showed herself not only as an actress, but also as a screenwriter. During the First World War, Janice took an active position in support of the American and British military. She toured extensively with concerts for the troops, performing in the rear and on the front lines, and was also involved in the implementation of war bonds. In addition to her acting career, Janice was known as the author and performer of a number of popular songs, including "Any Time's the Time to Fall in Love", "I'm True to the Navy Now", "Live and Love Today", "Molly-O- Mine, From the Valley, Your Eyes, Some Sort of Somebody, Oh, Give Me Time for Tenderness, and A Little Love. In the early 1930s, the last three films were released based on Janice's scripts - Madame Satan (1930), Reach the Moon (1930) and Indian Husband (1931). Janice's acting career continued until the early 1940s, when after a number of roles on Broadway and appearing in the film Women at War (1940), she left the stage and from the screen.
In 1932, Elsie Janice married Gilbert Wilson, with whom she lived for many years in Sleepy Hollow, New York. She spent the last years of her life in Beverly Hills, California, where she died in February 1956 at the age of 66. Elsie Janice was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, and four years after her death, a star was laid in her honor on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as a sign of her contribution to the US film industry.
