April 1, 1930 - May 1, 2015 - American actress. She is best known for her role as Janice Rand in the first season of NBC's Star Trek: The Original Series (1966). She then reprized the role in the feature films Star Trek: The Movie (1979), Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home (1986) and Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country (1991) .
Whitney was born in Ann Arbor and raised in a foster family, which is why she changed her name. Her career began on radio in Detroit, and in 1951 she made her Broadway debut. During the 1950s, she moved to Hollywood, where she found steady work in television westerns and minor roles on the big screen. Her first significant role was in the 1963 film Tender Irma, after which Whitney worked on television. After being fired from Star Trek, she continued her career, appearing in Batman, Big Valley, The Hart Spouses and Star Trek: Voyager .
In 1998, Whitney wrote a book in which she said that she was sexually abused by directors of the manufacturing company Star Trek, as well as her subsequent struggle with alcohol and drug addiction.
She died at home on May 1, 2015.
