Born April 2, 1908 in Belleville, Illinois, USA. His father, Christian Rudolf Ebsen Sr., is Danish, and his mother, Francis, is Latvian. In 1920, the family moved to Orlando, Florida. At the same time, Ebsen, together with his sisters, began to study in a dance studio. After graduating from high school in 1926, he initially showed an interest in medicine. In 1926-27 he studied at the University of Florida at Gainesville, and then at Rollins College (1927-28), but financial problems in the family forced him to leave college. In the summer of 1928, he left Orlando to try himself as a dancer. In New York, she and her sister Wilma performed in clubs and vaudeville - they were known as "Baby Astaires". As members of the choir in 1934, they appeared on Broadway. Walter Winchell's enthusiastic review of their performance in Atlantic City gave new creative impetus and brought Brother and Sister Ebsen to Palace Theater, the pinnacle of vaudeville. In 1935, the Ebsens signed a two-year contract with MGM and moved to Hollywood, where their debut film, Broadway Melody of 1936, was soon released. This was Wilma's first and only film since she soon left show business, but Buddy has appeared in numerous musicals and films. Everyone noted Buddy Ebsen's unusual, almost surreal style of dance. Walt Disney selected him to incorporate Mickey Mouse dance routines into his animated work "Silly Symphonies" .
In 1939, Buddy Ebsen starred as the Scarecrow Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz and later became Iron Man in the same film. However, already during filming, he began to experience spasms and shortness of breath, and in the end it all ended with hospitalization. The reason was an allergy to the aluminum dust used in the work, so Ebsen had to leave the project. During World War II, Buddy Ebsen first taught naval affairs to US Navy officer candidates; later served in the Coast Guard, as a Damage Control Officer, and then as Executive Director of the Navy Coast Guard. He honorably completed his service as a lieutenant in 1946.
In 1949 he made his debut on television, later worked a lot and fruitfully there. Throughout the 1950s, Ebsen starred in many films. In 1961, he starred in the famous Breakfast at Tiffany's, an elderly rural veterinarian who was abandoned by his young wife, played by Audrey Hepburn. This role led him to the casting of "The Beverly Hillbillies" .
Playing in the project "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962-1971), Ebsen became truly famous, he was the star of the ensemble cast.
Ebsen returned to television in early 1973 as Barnaby Jones.
The actor took part in the creation of documentaries of the series "Disney. Family Album" in the 1980s on the Disney channel and several others. Buddy Ebsen has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He was married three times, from these marriages he has eight children. Throughout his long life, Buddy Ebsen had many hobbies: public speaking, traveling, singing, playing the guitar, golfing, equestrianism, swimming, gardening, fishing, sailing, painting, and coin collecting. But undoubtedly his favorite pastime was dancing.
He died on July 6, 2003 from pneumonia at the age of 95.
