June 23, 1927, Chicago, Illinois, USA - September 23, 1987, Washington, USA - American choreographer, dancer, theater and film director, screenwriter, actor.

Since the beginning of the Great Depression, the main income of the head of the family has been the sale of insurance policies. His wife Sarah Alice, nee Sara Alice Stanton, from a family of Irish Catholics, was brought to America in infancy. For some time in her youth, she worked as a professional dancer, but left the stage to raise children. Despite the Catholic religious beliefs of Mrs. Fossey's parents, as well as Cy's membership in the Masonic lodge, the family raised the children in the traditions of the Methodist Church. Robert, the fifth out of six children (older brothers Cyril Jr., Edward, Donald, Buddy and sister Patricia), entered the choreography studio at the age of 4, and a little later moved to the Frederick Weaver ballet school, where he was the only boy at that time. At first, he faced disdainful bullying by peers, but after a few skirmishes he stopped any ridicule. In his early youth, with his friend Charlie Grass (Charles Grass), Robert created a dance duet "The Riff Brothers", which quickly became a commercial success. By the age of 15, he worked as an entertainer in nightclubs. In 1945, after graduating from high school, he was drafted into the US Navy and, as part of a concert unit, performed at the bases of the Pacific Ocean. According to Fossey's own statement, it was there that his dancer and choreographer technique was formed.

After demobilization, Robert went to New York, where he thought to repeat the career of Fred Astaire. There he met the dancer Mary Ann Niles. Soon the young people got married and, in addition, created a creative duet, which successfully performed in nightclubs. In 1950, Bob Fossey made his Broadway debut in the revue Dance Me A Song. During this time, Fossey began a love relationship with one of the participants in the production, Joan McCracken, which led to a break with Mary Ann. Joan McCracken, who became Fossey's second wife in 1951, had classical ballet training, as well as influential friends and a certain fortune. Thanks to her, Robert began to study acting and current trends in choreography.

In 1953 Fossey left for Hollywood where he signed his first contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In just a few months, he starred in three films, the first of which was the youth comedy Dobie Gillis Love Stories.

In 1954, Robert Fossey returned to New York, where director and producer George Abbott was preparing to stage the musical Pajama Game.

The musical premiered on 13 May 1954 in St. James Theater. Before it began, Jerome Robbins presented Fossey with his father's gold cufflinks, which for several years became a sign of mutual respect and a talisman of good luck for the two choreographers. Subsequently, the performance withstood 1,063 performances (in addition, it was restored in 1973 and 2006).

Bob Fossey won eight Tony Choreography Awards (best ever nominated in 1955, 1956, 1959, 1963, 1966, 1973, 1978, 1986), Academy Awards for Best Director and BAFTA Awards for Cabaret (1973 year).
