Born November 30, 1960, Brooklyn, New York, USA is an American screenwriter and television producer and playwright.
His father was an actor and salesman; his mother, an English and philosophy teacher, "did some teaching." He has an older brother and sister.
He attended Queens College in Queens, New York.
Katims was a New York playwright until director and producer Ed Zwick asked him if he would like to write scripts for television and film.
In 1994, he wrote the scripts for three episodes of ABC's teen drama My So-Called Life.
Katims has worked on NBC's Friday Night Lights as Principal Writer and Executive Producer. He was nominated for the US Writers Guild Award for Best New Series at a ceremony in February 2007 for his work on the second season of Friday Night Lights. Katims was nominated for Best Drama Series for the second time at a ceremony in February 2009 for his work on the third season of Friday Night Lights. He was nominated for the WGA Best Drama Series for the third consecutive year at a ceremony in February 2010 for his work on a fourth season. In 2011, he was awarded an Emmy for Best Screenplay in a Drama Series for the finale of Friday Night Lights.
Katims is also the creator and executive producer of another NBC series, Parents, based on the film of the same name and the short-lived series that followed; The Katimsa series debuted in 2010 and ended in 2015.
He wrote the play, The Man Who Can't Dance, and is a former member of Stagewrights, a New York-based playwrights collective.
