Kelly's father, who worked for an agricultural firm, drowned when Kelly was 3 years old; Kelly's mother, Linda, who worked as an administrator at a mental health center, later married Peter Palzis, who adopted the future actress. It was under the name of her stepfather that Kelly was known at the beginning of her career. Kelly had a half-brother, Chris Palzis.
As a child, Kelly lived in Iraq and Australia. She completed her secondary education in the latter country and later returned to the United States.
For the first time on the American continent she starred as the daughter of a colonel for the television series In the Name of Love and Honor (1983). Great success came to her after participating in the film "Gemini" (1988).
In 2004, Kelly Preston starred in the video for the song She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5.
