December 28, 1908 - December 30, 1996 - American actor, Academy Award nominee in 1948.
Born in Minneapolis to Louis and Irma Ayres. When he was four years old, his parents divorced, after which he moved to San Diego with his mother and stepfather. After dropping out of school, Ayrs founded his own musical group, with which he performed in Mexico for a month. Upon his return, he continued his career as a musician, playing banjo and guitar in a number of big bands. During one of the performances in a nightclub, Ayres met an agent of one of the Hollywood film studios, who offered him a contract to shoot a movie. He made his debut in 1929 in The Kiss, starring Greta Garbo. The subsequent role in the war drama All Quiet on the Western Front made Ayres a star and secured a long-term contract in Hollywood. From 1938 to 1942, the actor played the role of Dr. Kildred in nine films about him, and in the early 1950s he returned to this image in a series of radio shows. During World War II, Ayres served in the US Army, first as a first aid instructor, and then as an orderly and assistant chaplain in the Pacific Ocean. He donated all the money he earned over the years of service to the American Red Cross. In 1948 Ayres was nominated for an Academy Award for the lead role in Johnny Belinda. In the 1950s, the actor began to work more in television, where his productive career continued until the early 1990s. During this time, he has appeared in dozens of television series and television films, including Trunk Smoke, Colombo, The Streets of San Francisco, The Hotel, Private Detective Magnum, and Team A. Among the films of that time with his participation are such films as "Big Thieves" (1964), "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" (1973), "Salem Vampires" and "Omen 2: Damien" (1978) .
Lew Ayres was married three times: from 1931 to 1933 - to the actress Lola Lane, from 1934 to 1940 - to the actress Ginger Rogers, and from 1964 until her death - Diana Hall, who gave birth to his son Justin in 1968. He also had a short romance with actress Jane Wyman, which led to her divorcing Ronald Reagan. The actor died on December 30, 1996, two days after his eighty-eighth birthday in Los Angeles. Buried at Westwood Cemetery. His contributions to the film industry are starred on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
