April 4, 1898 - December 25, 1940 - American actress who was popular during the silent film era.
She began her acting career in 1914 at Essanay Studios in Chicago, where she starred in Chaplin's film His New Job, and then continued her film career in New York.
Her career took off when she was spotted by Paramount Pictures founder Jesse Luxy, who helped her star in several of his studio. Luxy also helped her achieve several roles in Cecil B. DeMille's films, including The Case of Anatole (1921) and The Ten Commandments (1923). Ayres reached star status in 1921 after starring in the film The Sheikh with Rudolfo Valentino, and then appeared in its sequel, The Son of the Sheikh in 1926.
By the mid-1920s, her relationship with Jesse Luxy had deteriorated markedly, and this caused a noticeable decline in her career. By that time, the actress had already been married twice and had a daughter. In 1929, Agnes Ayres lost her entire fortune in a stock market crash, and in the same year she played her last major role in The Donovan Affair.
Failure in the cinema forced her to leave the big screen and make a living by participating in vaudeville. In 1936 she tried to revive her film career, but having achieved only a couple of cameo roles in obscure films, a year later she finally left the cinema.
In 1939, the actress lost custody of her daughter, and spent the last years of her life in complete despair in a sanatorium. Agnes Ayres died of a stroke on Christmas Day 1940. For her contributions to cinematography, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
