October 12, 1903 - June 4, 1998 - American actress.
She was born in Seattle, Washington. Her mother, Leona Roberts, was an actress. Through her mother's connections, thirteen-year-old Josephine landed a cameo role in The Little Princess starring Mary Pickford. Then the girl graduated from the Cornish School of Music and Drama in Seattle and moved to New York, where she began to play in the theater.
In 1924, Hutchinson married director Robert Bell. In 1926, the actress met Eva Le Gallienny, who founded her own theater company, Civic Repertory Theater. In 1927, a romance began between women, which became known in 1928. Hutchinson and Bell divorced in 1930 because of the scandal that broke out.
Under an agreement with Warner Bros. Hutchinson went to Hollywood in 1934, where she made her debut in Happiness Ahead. In 1935, Josephine married James Townsend, but the couple soon divorced. In 1936, the actress got the lead role in the film The Tale of Louis Pasteur, which tells the story of the life of the French microbiologist and chemist Louis Pasteur.
In 1939, Hutchinson played the role of Elsa von Frankenstein in the Universal Studios film Son of Frankenstein. In 1959, the actress played Mrs. Townsend in the spy thriller North by Northwest .
Throughout the 1970s, the actress continued to work steadily in film, television and radio, receiving mostly supporting roles. In 1972, Josephine Hutchinson married the actor Stats Cotsworth. They lived together for seven years, until Cotsworth's death in 1979.
Josephine Hutchinson died on June 4, 1998 at the Florence Nightingale Nursing Home at the age of 94. The actress was buried in New York.
