Born on March 2, 1891 in the city of Vyazniki.
In 1913 he graduated from the Alekseevsk military school in Moscow, served in the army.
In 1923 he graduated from the three courses of the acting department of the First State School and from the same year - one of the leading actors in the experimental workshop of Lev Kuleshov.
In 1923-1934 he was the dean of the acting faculty, head of the department of the experimental workshop of Lev Kuleshov at the State Electoral Commission.
Since 1956 - an actor at the Film Actor's Studio Theater.
He taught acting at VGIK.
He died on December 23, 1957 in Moscow. The urn with the ashes was buried in the columbarium of the Donskoy cemetery.
