February 13, 1911 - July 23, 1996 - American actress.
She was born in Suffern, New York. Her professional acting debut took place on Broadway in 1930, and three years later, Muir made her film debut. She played most of her film roles at Warner Bros. Studios, where she had roles in films such as Fuel for China's Lamps (1935), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) and White Fang ( 1936). In 1937, the actress left the studio, and in the following years she was involved in the theater most of the time, including in Broadway productions. In 1939, she was considered a candidate for the role of Melanie Hamilton in Victor Fleming's Gone With the Wind. After her marriage to producer Henry Jaffe in 1940, Muir also began to devote a lot of time to raising three children. In 1949, Muir began her career in television, soon getting one of the roles in the TV series "Seymeika Aldrich". A year later, the actress was included in the list of supporters of communism in the political pamphlet "Red Channels", and soon NBC was forced to remove her from the show due to numerous letters from viewers protesting against her participation in the series. In subsequent years, the actress also experienced difficulties with work, which caused her to have problems with alcohol. She managed to return to her acting career in the early 1960s, when she reappeared on Broadway and got new roles on television. However, her return was short-lived, and after several roles, Muir ended her career by moving to Columbia, Missouri, where she taught acting in college for the following years. The actress spent the last years of her life in a nursing home in Mesa, Arizona, where she died in the summer of 1996 at the age of 85. her contributions to US cinematography are starred on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
