March 3, 1900, Hove, East Sussex, England, UK - September 18, 1974, Geneva, Switzerland - British actress.

Educated in Brighton. She studied drama at the Guildhall School of Music and Theater in London. In 1917, she made her debut as an actress on the Southampton theater stage, and in 1921 she first appeared on the silver screen. Most memorable was her role in the original 1934 version of Alfred Hitchcock's thriller The Man Who Knew Too Much. Her film career lasted until the late 1940s, during which time Best appeared in such films as Intermezzo (1939), The Phantom and Mrs. Muir (1947) and The Iron Curtain (1948).

In the 1950s, she had a short career in television, where she was nominated for an Emmy in 1957 for her role in the television movie This Happy Generation. In those same years, she returned to the theater stage several times, performing several times on Broadway.

In 1939, Best became an American citizen. The actress was married three times, and the first two marriages ended in divorce. In 1933, from her second husband, actor Herbert Marshall, she gave birth to a daughter, Sarah Marshall, who became an actress like her parents. Edna Best died in a clinic in Geneva in 1974 at the age of 74. Her contributions to the US film industry are starred on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
