January 9, 1929, Antwerp, Belgium - March 19, 2012, New York, USA - American film director and producer of Belgian origin.
A former diamond cutter in his native Belgium, Ulu Grossbard was educated at the University of Chicago; then attended Yale School of Drama. Directing in 1957, Grosbard directed many successful Broadway shows.
In the early 60s, Grosbard traveled to Hollywood, where he was hired as an assistant director for several film productions, and a few years later he directed his first film If Not For Roses, a fairly successful adaptation of the hit Broadway show (The Subject Was Roses ( 1968)). Grossbard's film career has been quite sporadic; however, he enjoyed much greater success with Broadway shows.
