grew up in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where he attended St. Cloud Apollo High School ". In 1980, he graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota and the University of Seville in Spain. After graduation, he spent 4 years as an actor in theater groups and as a leader of rock bands throughout Europe. He immediately returned to the United States and moved to Los Angeles, where he graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in three years, earning a master's degree and winning director and script awards for the short film Excellent Alibi.

Excellent Alibi helped Sommers secure independent funding to write and direct his first feature film, a racing teen film Catch Me If You Can, which was filmed for $ 800,000 in his hometown of St Cloud. The film sold at the Cannes Film Festival for $ 7 million and later made its video debut in the United States.

Nearly four years later, bankruptcy and the danger of his house being taken away, he wrote and directed the Walt Disney Pictures adaptation of Mark Twain's classic tale, The Adventures of Huck Finn, as well as The Jungle Book. He later wrote the scripts for The Shooter and Tom and Huck, where he also executive produced for Disney (along with the 1997 TV version of Oliver Twist starring Richard Dreyfuss and Elijah Wood), and also worked screenwriter at Hollywood Pictures. While he was there, he worked on a script called Tentacles, which he later filmed under the title Rise from the Deep in 1998.

In 1999, he wrote and directed a high-budget remake of The Mummy for Universal Studios. The film was a hit and Sommers received 2 Saturn Award nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay in 2000 from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. A successful sequel, The Mummy Returns, followed two years later, and he also wrote and produced the 2002 film The Scorpion King, a prequel / spin-off of The Mummy Returns.

In 2004, Sommers founded his own company (with editor / producer partner Bob Dukesay), The Sommers Company, and returned to the theater screen with the film Van Helsing, which features the legendary vampire hunter Gabriel Van Helsing, who fights against Universal monsters: Count Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein's monster. Before Van Helsing hit the screens, Sommers and Duxay began producing a spin-off television series titled Transylvania on NBC.

Since the days of Van Helsing, Sommers has been involved in many projects. He was originally supposed to direct the movie Night at the Museum, but dropped out due to creative differences. He was also involved in the remake of When Worlds Collide (which will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg), a new adaptation of Flash Gordon, the swashbuckling adventure film Airborn based on the novel of the same name, a romantic / adventure story called Big Love. and a remake of the French film "Les Victimes". Sommers refused to direct the movie The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, instead becoming one of the producers of the film.

Sommers directed the 2009 summer action adaptation of GI Joe: Toss the Cobra for Paramount Pictures, where he also produced the film. Around the same time, he was developing an adaptation of Tarzan for Warner Bros. but left the project. His most recent film, Strange Thomas, was canceled indefinitely due to lawsuits against the production company.
