Born 1950 in Los Angeles, California is a film and television director, screenwriter and producer.
He began his undergraduate education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied philosophy and creative writing, before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Film from the University of Southern California in 1972. He continued his education at the University of California, Los Angeles, enrolling in a master's degree program in visual arts, and earning his master's degree in film art in 1975. The following year, he wrote, produced and directed his first film, Independence Day. His 1984 film, Heartbreaking, entered the 35th Berlin International Film Festival. Throughout his career, Roth has written, produced and directed several television series, films and episodes.
He was one of the founders of the Independent Feature Project and the first co-chair of the DGA's Independent Feature Committee. His films have won numerous awards and have been screened at over 100 international film festivals. He also teaches at film workshops around the world and is the recipient of the 2017 Miami Web Fest Lifetime Achievement Award.
