In her youth, she spent a lot of time at the local theater with her mother, the theater director. She first appeared on stage at the age of 5 in a local production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Mekenna is a graduate of Independence High School in San Jose, CA.
She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and the British American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Oxford. In addition, Mekenna has a black belt in karate.
