Rutina attended school at the Las Vegas Academy of International Performing Arts and Visual Arts (Las Vegas Academy She studied dance at Simba Studios and the West Las Vegas Arts Center. She then attended the University of Evansville in Indiana. After receiving her BA in Performing Arts) , Rutina's grandmother suggested that she graduate from nursing courses, but she decided to continue her education.Wesley entered the Juilliard School in 2001 and graduated in May 2005, after spending one summer at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
In December 2006, Wesley was invited to appear on David Hea's Broadway production of The Vertical Hour. In 2007 she also appeared onstage at The Public Theater in New York in Winter Miller's "In Darfur", which also starred Heather Raffo, Aaron Laure and others.
Wesley had a small role in 2005's The Hitch Rules: The Hitch Method, but it was eventually cut. Rutina eventually made her big-screen debut in 2007, starring Raya in British director Ian Iqbal Rashid's How She Moves, about a girl who can't afford private medical school and competes in a dance competition to win a major money prize. Wesley underwent five weeks of dance training prior to filming this movie.
In 2007, she auditioned for the role of Tara Thornton in Alan Ball's new series True Blood, which chose her because "she was the first person to show Tara's vulnerabilities." Tara was originally supposed to be played by Brooke Kerr. In addition to her main role so far, Tara Rutina played an episode in the TV series "4isla" and voiced a couple of episodes in the animated series Generator Rex and The Cleveland Show. In 2011, Wesley's drama California Winter is due out. She was nominated twice as part of the True Blood team for Best Cast: 2009 - Scream, 2010 - Screen Actors Guild Awards.
In 2016, Wesley was invited to star in the Oprah Winfrey Network series "Queen of the Sugar Plantations" produced by Ava Duvernay and Oprah Winfrey.
