Born 22 August 1922, Haifa - Israeli violinist.
Born into a Jewish family that had moved to Palestine from Kamyanets-Podolsk a year earlier. On the recommendation of Bronislav Guberman, he went to study in Paris, studied with Marcel Chailly, then with George Enescu and Jacques Thibault, graduated from the Paris Conservatory in the class of Jules Boucher; later improved under the guidance of Karl Flesch. In 1939 he moved to England, where he spent the Second World War, made his debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and made his first recordings for the BBC. In 1951 he returned to Israel. In 1955 he undertook his first world tour. Since the late 1960s. lives in France.
In 1990 Gitlis received the title of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. In 2016, Ivry Gitlis took over as chairman of the jury of the IV Leopold Auer International Competition for Violinists and Quartets, which is taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia.
