Born April 7, 1931, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Canadian television, film director, producer, actor, and screenwriter.
After graduating from college at the University of Toronto with a degree in English literature, Kotcheff began his television career at the age of twenty-four by joining the staff of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, when television was still largely in its infancy in the country. Kotcheff was the youngest director on the company's staff, where he worked for two years on a show like the General Motors Theater before leaving Canada in 1958 to live and work in the UK.
He was inspired by his compatriot Sydney Newman, who was a drama director at the same corporation and moved to the UK to take up a similar position at ABC, one of the local ITV franchisees, which also produced much of the programming for the channel's national broadcast network. At ABC, Newman directed the popular drama program Armchair Theater, and he directed the series to Kotcheff, who directed several productions between 1958 and 1960.
