Television was severely restricted in her family and she did not go to the cinema until she was 16 years old. Rosema studied philosophy and English literature at Calvin College, Michigan.
Patricia began her film career in 1984. In 1998, Rozema received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Classical Music and Dance Program for the Bach Inspired film series. She was part of a loosely-knit group of filmmakers who emerged in the 1980s from Toronto, known as Toronto's New Wave.
Patricia is an open lesbian. Rosema has two daughters from a relationship with composer Leslie Barber - Jacob Leslie Barber-Rosema (born 02.22.1996) and Evie Barber-Rosema (born 02.10.2004).
