Born September 12, 1943, Colombo, Sri Lanka - Canadian writer, poet, screenwriter, actor and producer.
Descendant of burghers - children from marriages of Sri Lankans with the Dutch. In 1954, young Ondaatje moved with his mother Doris Gratian to England, and then in 1962 he moved to Canada and became its citizen.
He began his studies at Bishops College and Bishops University, located in the Lennoxville suburb of Sherbrooke, Quebec. But because of the move to Toronto, he received his bachelor's degree at the University of Toronto, and received his master's degree at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. Then he began teaching at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. In 1970 he moved to Toronto, where from 1971 to 1988 he taught English literature at York University and Glendon College.
Ondaatje is best known in the world for his novels, but mostly works in the field of poetry, having already released 13 collections.
Ondaatje and his wife, writer and philologist Linda Spaulding, are members of the management of the literary magazine Brick, which specializes in nonfictional prose.
In 1992 established the annual Gratian Literary Award for the best work in English written by a resident of Sri Lanka.
He is best known for his novel The English Patient, which won the Booker Prize (the Oscar-winning film of the same name was also made based on this novel). In 2018, The English Patient won the special Golden Booker Prize, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Booker Prize, and is awarded based on a vote of readers who voted the book the best book on the Booker's List in 50 years.
