Born July 18, 1969, Connecticut, USA - American writer.
Her father was a chemical engineer, her mother was a nurse. Together with her sister, writer and historian Catherine Gilbert-Murdoch, Elizabeth grew up on a small family Christmas tree farm in Litchfield, Connecticut. The family grew up in a region where there are no neighbors, they did not have a TV or even a player. Consequently, they all read a lot, and Gilbert and her sister entertained themselves by composing short stories and plays.
In 1991, Elizabeth received her BA in Political Science from New York University, after which she worked as a cook, waitress and journalist. She has written short stories about her experiences in cooking, and also briefly mentioned them in her book The Last American Man (2002).
In 1993, Esquire magazine published Elizabeth Gilbert's story "The Pilgrims" under the title "The Debut of an American Writer." She became the first previously unpublished writer to make her Esquire debut since Norman Mailer.
This has led to full-time work as a journalist for various national magazines including SPIN, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, Allure, Real Simple, Travel + Leisure. As stated in Eat Pray Love, Gilbert has made a career as a highly paid freelance writer.
In 1998, Gilbert also adapted her GQ article on the biography of the contemporary naturalist, "Eustace Conway Is Not Like the Man You Have Ever Met," into The Last American Man. The book was nominated for the National Prize in the Popular Science Book section.
Ranked sixth in Watkins' Mind Body Spirit magazine's 2012 list of the 100 most influential spiritual leaders of our time.
