December 11, 1905 - May 15, 1994, Mexican American film actor.
Born in Mexico and originally intended to become a bullfighter like his father. When the family moved to the United States, however, he became interested in cinema and starred in several secondary roles. He chose a pseudonym for himself, combining the names of his favorite actors John Gilbert and Ruth Roland.
Beginning in the 1940s, critics began to take notice of him.
Roland was married to actress Constance Bennett from 1941 to 1946. His second marriage to Gilmenia Cantu in 1954, continued until his death forty years later.
Died of cancer in Beverly Hills, California in 1994 at the age of 88. His remains were cremated and his ashes scattered over the sea.
Roland was nominated twice for a Golden Globe for his roles in The Wicked and the Beautiful (1952) and Autumn of the Cheyenne (1964). Roland Gilbert received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (# 6730) for his contributions to the film industry.
