Born March 6, 1967, Atlanta is an American actor and singer. He was the youngest of three children. His father, Sam Hensley Jr., is a former Georgia Institute of Technology soccer player, engineer, and former state senator. His mother, Iris (nee Antley), was a ballerina and later the artistic director of the Georgia Ballet Company. Hensley got his start in show business early, appearing at the age of four as Fritz in The Nutcracker, directed by his mother.
Hensley graduated from Westminster School in Atlanta and attended the University of Georgia on a baseball scholarship. After attending a Jesse Norman concert and casting for the role of Judge Turpin in the student production of Sweeney Todd, he decided to drop out of university after his sophomore year to study at the Manhattan School of Music. He specialized in opera singing at a music school and graduated in 1989. From there he went to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he earned his master's degree in 1993.
Hensley began his career in the early 1990s in the musicals On the Town, The Most Happy Fella and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He also sang in Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas The Pirates of Penzance and Patience and in the operas Carmen, Faust, La Boheme and Don Juan. Gruvemuvestart In 1996 Hensley traveled to Hamburg to star in the German musical The Phantom of the Opera. In 1998, he played Jad Fry in the musical Oklahoma! At London's National Theater. The production was a huge success and Hensley received excellent personal reviews and a Laurence Olivier Award. Hensley continued to play the role when the show was moved to London's West End Theater (1999) and then to Broadway (2002-2003), where he won a Tony for his work. For the same role, he was also awarded the 2002 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award.
Hensley played with Hugh Jackman on numerous occasions, first in the musical Oklahoma! in London in 1998, and then in the films "Flirt with the Beast" and "Van Helsing", in the latter of which Hensley played the monster of Frankenstein. Hensley took part in the Broadway production of Mel Brooks' musical Young Frankenstein as a monster. For this role, he was nominated in 2008 for the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Performance in a Leading Actor in a Musical. In 2009 he toured the United States with the musical Young Frankenstein, which also starred Roger Barth and Corey English. In 2011, he played the role of Boris Tomashevsky in the production of The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater.
