Born February 20, 1943, Salford, England - British film director, screenwriter and actor.
Lee is often compared to Ken Loach, which, according to the director himself, is not entirely true due to the absence of a political component in his films. Avoiding sensationalism and melodrama, Lee confidently develops themes of human relations between ordinary, unremarkable people, often belonging to the working class.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Lee was regarded as a promising theater actor in the late 1960s. For a long time he oscillated between television and film, having no success in either of these areas. The long-awaited recognition brought him the films "High Hopes" (1988) and "Nudes" (1993, the prize for the best director at the Cannes Film Festival).
In 1996, his family drama "Secrets and Lies" won the Palme d'Or, and the female lead was awarded a Golden Globe. Eight years later, Lee left the Venice Film Festival with the Golden Lion for the much more pessimistic film Vera Drake, which later received several Oscar nominations.
In 2008, Lee was awarded the main award at the Berlin Film Festival for the comedy "Carefree", but the case was limited to "Silver Bear" for the best actress. Had he won the Golden Bear, Mike Lee would have become the only living recipient of major awards from all three of the world's most prestigious film festivals.
