Born June 17, 1936 in Nuneaton, Great Britain, in the family of a miner. While studying at Oxford, he enrolled in the experimental theater club. Since 1961, he has been filming a documentary television series about the life of the homeless for the BBC, which received a huge public response. In 1968, Loach's first feature film, Poor Cow, with Terence Stump in the title role, was released. This film debut is characterized by a combination of formal sophistication in the spirit of the French "new wave" with the earthiness, which film critics have called the "realism of the kitchen sink." Ken Loach remained a representative of this trend, along with Mike Lee, throughout his career. He always avoided intersections with Hollywood, following the tradition of social realism instilled in British cinema by John Schlesinger. The peak of Loach's early work was the film "Kes" (1969), which the British Film Institute classified in the twentieth century as one of the best achievements of national cinema. After many years of relative oblivion, Loach again attracted attention with the painting "Behind the Veil of Secrecy" (1990), awarded the prize of the jury at the Festival de Cannes. Its theme is Irish separatism. The film "Ladybug Fly to Heaven", released in 1995, received no less praise at the Berlin Festival. In 2003 Ken Loach was awarded the Emperor of Japan Art Prize. Loach's "Black" comedy "Angels' Share" (2012) earned him a jury prize at the 65th Cannes Film Festival.
